ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Daniel Garrison Brinton (1837–1899), an influential figure in modern American anthropology, was a versatile American surgeon, historian, archaeologist, and ethnologist. Serving as a surgeon during the American Civil War in the Union Army, he later worked in medicine and edited The Medical and Surgical Reporter. Brinton held academic positions in ethnology and archaeology at the Academy of Natural Sciences and the University of Pennsylvania. A prolific writer, he authored various brochures, articles, pamphlets, addresses, and books, including "Notes on the Floridian Peninsula," "The Myths of the New World," "American Hero Myths," and "The Pursuit of Happiness."
